Why I Have a Love-Hate Relationship with Wedding “Trends”

Ugh. My Love-Hate relationship with trends continues.

However, this time it’s not because of any specific practice or trend that is currently showing popularity among engaged couples . . .

. . . but with the seemingly loose usage of the word “Trend.”

Over 60 million couples got married in the U.S. last year alone. With that many people, it only make sense that many will be making similar choices.

However, just because a lot of couples followed a similar practice for their wedding, it’s not always enough to call it a trend.

Sometimes it’s merely choices.

Peonies, garden roses, ranunculus, and dahlias are popular flower selections; Greenery is Pantone’s 2017 color of the year; Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” is the top requested song – these choices are trends as there are many options (literally hundreds) that couples could have chosen.

However, other choices are merely the same “are you or aren’t you” choices that have been made for decades. Choices, not trends.

Most recently, two non-trend choices have somehow been deemed as the latest trends. They are:

1. Not inviting children to the wedding

AND

2. Not doing a seating chart for the reception

People – THESE ARE NOT TRENDS.

These practices are not something new. They are not suddenly the “in” thing.

For years, many couples have chosen to not invite children to their wedding.

For years, many couples have chosen not to do a seating chart, opting for open seating instead.

But guess what? Just as many DID invite children, and just as many HAD assigned seating at their reception.

Which makes them choices, not trends. Choices that brides and grooms have been making for years. And they’re just a couple of the gazillion other choices that every couple makes when planning their wedding.

Ok, Thanks for letting me rant. I’ll climb down from my soapbox now.

2017 Wedding Trend Predictions

zodiac wheel with red heart for love divination

It’s time to take a look and see what trends we’re going to be seeing at weddings this year.

Rustic/Barn Weddings
Yes, the desire for Rustic/Barn weddings is still going strong. But it’s more than mason jars and wooden slabs.

Couples are going for more sweet and whimsical, and vintage inspired. Sunflowers are a fun choice. We’ll see touches of burlap, lace, and distressed accent tables (for your guest book or wedding cake), and romantic lighting.

Softer/Muted Color Schemes
We’re seeing more pastels and neutrals – the wedding gown and bridesmaids dresses, the table linens, and the flowers – in weddings that range from rustic to elegant.

Non-Traditional Food and Beverage Choices
Food trucks (think gourmet croquettes, homemade pretzel bites, slow roasted pork belly, pizza), and artisanal beers from a local brewery will be big hits.

Yellow
From sunny sunflower to romantic pastels yellow is the “in” color, and will be used in flowers, attire, accents (ex. ribbons, napkins), and other decor.

Metallics
Mettallics are showing up all over, including wedding gowns, bridesmaids dresses, the wedding cake, shoes, and vases. It’s no longer a choice between “gold or silver” but a mix of metallic colors (think warm golds, copper, polished silver, pewter, bronze).

Dark Gray
We’ll see this elegant color in mens formalwear, bridesmaids dresses, table linens and accents.

2016 Wedding Trend Predictions

It’s time to gaze into the crystal ball, read the tea leaves, pull out the tarot cards . . .

Here’s what we’ll be seeing at weddings this year.

  • Metallics
This year we will be seeing more shine in table linens, vases, and invitations.
  • Sparkle
Bling is still “in.” Accenting centerpieces, invitations, wedding gowns.
  • Non-floral centerpieces
Candelabras, manzanita trees/branches, tall vases filled with fresh fruit, paper flowers.
  • Specialty/His-Hers Cocktails
Couples will add some personality (and help keep the bar cost down) by offering special drinks.
  • Barn weddings
The rustic look and feel is still very popular.
  • Evolution of the photo booth
We’ll still see the traditional photo booths, but more couples will be opting for those that offer open air style, green screens, and flip books.
  • Creative seating arrangements
Couples will mix things up with a combination of square and round tables.
